Week 11 Cumulative Power Rankings

Intro

Hello and happy New Year everyone! I finally put together a Power Ranking for our fantasy basketball league. I did this by I calculating the z-scores of all our 9-cat productions, dropping each of our worst categories and averaging out our scores to get our final ranks.

For those of you unfamiliar with z-scores, it basically calculates how above/below average you are in each category. 0 is neutral, -1 is significantly bad, 1 is significantly good. Everything else I bet you can figure out. I listed our cumulative stats (& their respective z-scores) under each manager. I hope this is fun and informative!

-This squad is in some rough shape but hopefully David can spruce things up. It will be a long shot even if he does though because it appears Larry was a completely absent manager and it shows in this team's cumulative stats. Besides free throws and turnovers, this team is severely lacking thus far.

-Nate Dogg is an good friend of mine but his team stinks. Much like other abandoned teams, this unit is strong in turnovers and a token percentage but everything else is sub par. It's hard to tell in these ranks but maybe this squad would have a playoff chance is someone cared.

-Danny Leong's team is hurting in almost every category (even percentages). There are five cats with potential here (3s, rebs, asts, stls, and blks) but there is going to need to be a significant boost here. Much like the other teams in this tier, attention is the name of the game.

-I may sound like a broken record here, but Frank's team is below-average in every category besides three throws and turnovers. Perhaps this squad would be stronger in other cats if its manager was maximizing their substitutions but that is only a dream as of now.

-Possibly the most attentive manager as of late, Freddy has jumped into the fridges of the playoff picture due to an influx in stats across the board. If Freddy's team can continue to produce decent defensive/post-player stats, maybe he can slip into the post-season.

-Matt's team is a cut above the bottom because there are 3 above-average categories 3 more salvageable cats. Maybe Mr. Miller's squad hasn't been the strongest thus far but it is one with significant potential for bigger things.

-Much like Matt's team, Mr. Huckobey has a squad with 3 above-average categories and a few more that are only marginally below-average. If these categories are strategically harnessed, perhaps David will be in the playoffs.

-Nathan isn't terrible in any particular category but he's not mighty in any either. We have 4 cats here that are technically above-average but everything is pretty much within 0.5 of a standard deviation next to the mean. Maybe Nathan can harness his strengths and punt his weaknesses but, overall, I see this as a team currently destined for the middle.

-Evan is 7th in the standings but comes in 12th in my power rankings because he lacks a notable strength. Much like Nathan's team, Team Phan has proven itself decent in all categories while not really standing out. Perhaps something can be done to elevate this squad to the next level but I'm not exactly sure what that would be.

11. Team Berber (Daniel Joseph Berber)

-Team Berber has proven to be strong in field goal, rebounds, assists, and points with DeMarcus Cousins on the IR. This is one of the first teams to genuine strengths and could get even better once Cousins returns. Deservedly, this is first actual playoff threat listed.

-Mr. Belisle's team is very interesting in that almost none of his categories are below average (only his defensive stats are marginally deficient). However, Daniel also seems to lack a knockout strength that could be helpful in the playoffs. Either way, this team is clearly dangerous yet lacking enough teeth to be the scariest of all.

9. This Ain't It Chief (Alex Paige)

-Alex is bringing the pain at the free throw line and beyond the arc while delivering decent steals, points and turnovers as well. If this squad can continue to capitalize on their weaknesses while honing a couple more strengths, Mr. Paige could find himself contending.

-Here we have a team that is strong in 5 categories while being elite in another. Tyre has been able to assemble a formidable squad that can beat most of the opponents they face. Unfortunately, Mr. Jones isn't quite elite yet because he is "only" dominate in category (which may be in danger now that Wall is injured). If Tyre can develop another strong category or two into significant strengths, maybe he can jump into true contention.

-Sam's record may not reflect his stats but this squad is above-average in almost every category. Besides marginal deficits from the free throw line & turnovers, the elder KT has a team of all-around strength. If he can find some numbers to massage & develop another elite strength (besides steals), maybe Sam can become a significant championship contender.

6. Team Chambawamba (Karim Abdel-Malek)

-Karim may consider it a slight to have him in anything besides the top tier but the numbers don't lie. While Team Chambawamba is clearly in the championship mix (due to general strengths across the board), this unit is also lacking a clear elite category that can be counted on against the best. It is clear that Mr. Abdel-Malek has assembled a contender but I can't help but feel like another step is needed.

-Perhaps the team benefiting the least from dropping a category, Dorvan's squad is literally good in all 9 categories. Team Love is elite in blocks while missing their namesake (Kevin Love). I'm not sure if moves need to be made here but Mr. Byler might like to see another elite category or two before the playoffs start.

-Adam seems to have a strong strategy of punting his field goal percentage & turnovers while producing elite levels in at least 3 categories. Mr. Goodman has been an active manager who may strengthen his squad further but even if he doesn't, it will already be difficult to get past him in a playoff series.

-Chris's team may be falling in the standings but the stats still suggest that he's got one of the strongest teams around. With 4 distinctly elite categories and 2 other above-average showings as well, it is clear that Chris' squad will be difficult to beat come playoff time.

-It wouldn't be a Stolpp fantasy team if it wasn't competitive! Sean's squad currently sports the best field goal percentage in the league while also producing elite (or close to it) counting stats. It seems like Sean is punting free throws and possibly turnovers but, really, this squad has good numbers in just about everything. I look forward to going up against him!

-Don't look now but the guy who started the league is setting the pace. My turnovers are a complete punt & my percentages iffy but everything else is absolutely elite. With 6 categories currently sports a z-score of 1 or higher, it will take an extreme performance to beat my squad in a typical matchup. Good luck suckers!
